The C Programming Language QA 76.73 C15 K47 1988 *not* a C# book "Notes: 'Based on draft-proposed ANSI C'" From http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/cbook/2ediffs.html The first printing of the book was made before the Standard was finalized; these copies say "Based on Draft-Proposed ANSI C" on the front cover. All subsequent printings are identified by a large red ``ANSI C'' on the right center of the cover. From: http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/dmr/chist.html The C Programming Language, often called the `white book' or `K&R' Errata at: http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/cbook/2ediffs.html ---------- The C++ programming language / Bjarne Stroustrup. Edition: 3rd ed. QA 76.73 C153 S77 1997 From http://www.research.att.com/~bs/3rd.html The "special edition" is the hardcover version of the 3rd edition. It differs from the early printings of the 3rd edition by about 1,000 corrections and clarifications, by two new appendices (just over 100 pages; also available online, see below), and by an improved index. The only difference between the current printings of the special edition and the 3rd edition is the cover (and the price difference implied by that stronger cover). From http://www.research.att.com/~bs/3rd_errata.html In general, I consider late printings significant improvements over early printings. If I had a pre-2000 printing (e.g. a 9th printing) and I used it heavily, I'd retire it in favor of the latest printing. When will you publish a 4th edition of "The C++ Programming Language"? There won't be a need until 2004 or so. The definition of C++ and the fundamental techniques that it supports are unlikely to change significantly before then. When I write, I aim for a long "shelf life" and the ISO C++ standard ensures basic stability. In this context, it is important that The C++ Programming Language (3rd Edition) describes Standard C++, its standard library, and the techniques they support rather than some particular implementation and some proprietary library. Minor changes and additions I deal with through "online maintenance" and minor improvements to new printings of the book; see my errata. For 2000 printings - including the hardcover "special edition" - I have two new appendices on Locales and Standard-Library Exception Safety. The German translation of the "Special Edition" is referred to as the 4th edition.
